Confirm the roost and its access routes
A removal plan begins with evidence that bats are actually occupying the structure. The inspection considers where they emerge, where activity is heard and how roof or wall cavities connect. Seeing bats feeding above the yard is not enough to establish a building problem. An exterior evening observation may reveal more than a daytime glance at the roof.
Each opening needs a purpose in the plan. Some are active exits, while others could become alternate entrances. The contractor should explain that distinction before work starts, including how occupied spaces will remain accessible to departing bats. Choose a lawful window and suitable weather
Florida’s ordinary exclusion window is August 15 through April 15. Devices must stay in place for at least four nights with forecast overnight temperatures of at least 50°F. Restricted-season exceptions need FWC authorization. Calendar dates alone do not replace an assessment of the actual conditions.
Ask how the schedule will change if weather interferes with normal departures. A deadline for painting or replacing soffits should not force premature closure. Let bats leave without catching them inside
An exclusion device provides a controlled outward route. Its placement needs to match the building and the observed entrance, with a follow-up check before final closure. This is different from trapping individual animals or transporting a colony elsewhere. Poison, smoke and improvised attempts to drive bats deeper into a cavity do not belong in the plan.
If a bat appears in an occupied room during the process, keep people and pets away and contact the professional managing the work. Possible human or pet contact needs separate medical or veterinary advice. It should not be treated simply as another building-maintenance detail.
Finish with repairs and a cleanup assessment
Once departure is confirmed, the temporary exit arrangement can be removed and the opening repaired. Final work should address the access routes identified during inspection while preserving drainage and ventilation. Any accumulated waste needs a separate cleanup assessment; sealing a roof edge does not remove contamination already inside.
